Fixing up the RV

Sunday, 4 July 2010

I have a problem. My RV failed its MOT because the brakes were unbalanced. I took it to a local garage which shall remain nameless and they had it for about a month before declaring that they couldn’t fix it because they couldn’t track down the parts.

Given that it is built on a Toyota HiLux body I can’t see how it can be that difficult to locate the parts. I took the front wheel off and found that the assembly is by Aisin and that it would appear to be an OX1. All groovy so far.

Then I came to try the same with the rear wheels and that’s where I came unstuck. I had the tyres replaced last year and it would appear that King-Kong was entrusted with the task of making sure that the wheel nuts didn’t come loose. We had a torque wrench set to it’s highest setting of nearly 90 ft/lb and we couldn’t budge any of the nuts.

Why the hell do they do this? The manufacturer’s recommended setting was 75 ft/lb which we would have been able to shift no worries. God knows what the actual setting is.

With all the nice weather I was hoping to get the RV out and about, but now it’s going to have to wait until I can find someone to sort this out for me. The word that springs to mind is “Bugger!”
